Rolling With The Punches

Life doesn’t always go as planned—sometimes it’s even better than we imagined! John Carreiro was looking for a creative outlet while waiting to begin a fashion design program. “I thought: Let me try hairstyling in the meantime. I immediately knew it was for me!” Over 30 years later, it’s safe to say things turned out for this NATVA Canada Color Vision winner. “It still feels like yesterday. I still wake up looking forward to going to the studio and just doing great hair, every day.”

Back to that whole life-not-going-as-planned thing… John was visiting with family in Portugal the day before he had to be in LA for NATVA when he learned his model couldn’t make it. “I had to arrange a new model, wardrobe and make-up artist from Portugal. Working through jet lag, and not letting yourself be discouraged when things don’t go as planned, is always a challenge.” But he turned a challenge into a success story.

“I guess I like to work under pressure!” (Sound familiar? We thought so!!)

Like many of us, John has followed today’s top artists since the beginning of his career. “They became my mentors from afar.” Then, one day, he was backstage working side-by-side with them. “The Vouge photoshoot at Milk studios in LA was truly the icing on the cake!! To have Robert Lobetta drop in and hang out with us was truly inspiring and made the whole experience even more special. I kept thinking: Is this really happening?!”

“NATVA was truly quite the experience. I was so excited just being a finalist, but to win CTVA and have the honour of representing Canada at the ITVA in London is one of the greatest highlights of my career to date.”

When he’s not competing, John works at his salon, Carreiro the Studio, in Victoria, British Columbia where he gives back by mentoring his team. His passion to share the craft doesn’t stop there. “We also plan on opening our Academy and developing our education center this year.” We can’t wait to see what he does next!

Upcoming trend: Past Forward. I love where fashion is going! Making retro looks influenced by today’s culture – such as the bob, pixie, shag, mullet – cool and fun again.

Motto: ATTITUDE! The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible.
